Reflection
In the last decade overdose deaths have doubled. More than 70,000 died of drug overdose deaths in 2017. Nearly 70 percent of those deaths were due to synthetic opioids.
International Overdose Awareness Day was started 18 years ago, to remember those who have died from substance use disorder and provide education and resources to combat addiction.
The IOA Day website, overdoseday.com, and the National Safety Council website, nsc.org, provide a wealth of easy access information on ways to participate and sources for help.
Making the time in some personal way to mark this date carries three-fold importance by: deepening our own healing and understanding of the disease of addiction, helping those whose lives have been painfully impacted by it, and destigmatizing the disease.
